She Took a Stand by Staying in Her Seat – Claudette Colvin

48” x 41.5”

The frame is a replicated section of the bus she rode in Montgomery in 1955 composed of Versatex, plexiglas, rubber gasket and screws.

On March 2, 1955, Claudette was arrested at the age of 15, pregnant and unmarried, for refusing to give up her seat to a white woman on a crowded, segregated bus. This occurred nine months before the Rosa Parks incident.

“Scott’s pictures are always evocative, both in their media and in their subjects.

A bandage’s sole purpose is healing: that object’s only mission is to stop blood from being spilled.

Blood spills when a strong group exerts undue pressure on a weaker group to gain dominance.

My small task as picture framer was to visualize concepts that would amplify these pictures’ subjects without overpowering these images. Fortunately, the impact of seeing bandages instead of paint prepares one for a strong message.

The craft that went into creating these images is a vital part of these images. Big changes take work. Important ideas are seldom easy to integrate into complacent ideologies.

Be Strong.

And use strong hooks when hanging these pieces. They carry the weight of history.”
